Turtles

It is World Turtle Day ! I heard this on the radio on the way to work. I like turtles so I thought I would celebrate this day! The website above tells me that I can honor turtles by protecting and advocating for them. If I see a turtle crossing the road I should brake for it (I have never seen a turtle crossing the road in Oregon, or anywhere for that matter.) And I can help by keeping the beaches clean!

Some random turtle facts:

There are about 270 species of turtles, tortoises, and terrapins worldwide.

The Galapagos tortoise is the largest living species, weighing in some cases, over 570 pounds.

The oldest known tortoise may have been a radiated tortoise from Madagascar (Astrochelys radiata), which died in 1965. She was at least 188 years old, having been given to the Tonga royal family, by Captain Cook in 1773 or 1777.

Some female turtles produce eggs four years after mating.

Many snapping turtles have been known for biting for no reason at all and not letting go. (ouch!)

Happy World Turtle Day everyone!!!

HAPPY TURTLE DAY, I DID STOP FOR A TURTLE 1 DAY ON MY WAY TO WORK, I STOPPED AND PICKED HIM (OR HER) UP AND PUT THEM ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD SO NO ONE ELSE WOULD RUN OVER HIM..JUS A RANDOM DAY!

Jessica, I still may do it ... I just need to muster up the courage!

Mom, Look at you! You are already honoring the turtles. Nice job saving the little guy.

so I was on the island of Crete with a friend when we saw a booth that had a sign which said "turtles for sale". Upon further reading we noticed that it was similar to the time when my 1st grade class purchased a humpback whale. It's just a creative and fun way to get money to save animals. Anyway...so Brian goes over to the stand and says, "I'd like to buy two turtles medium well please." Being Greek, they weren't quite sure if they understood correctly, so he repeated "I'm hungry. Could I please have two turtles cooked medium well?" The women were shocked and dismayed and said "No, no, no, we're not selling the turtles for a meal. We are trying to save turtles!" It was so funny 'cause Brian acted all embarassed and was just like "oh, I feel so stupid. I'm sorry. I've just been traveling for so long and was so hungry. It's just a misunderstanding...is there a mcdonalds around here?"

Good times were had by all.

Ryan,

That is pretty funny! Did he know they were selling them as pets not food?
